During the 2007-2008 Plan implementation year, the Quality of Life and Survivorship Implementation Team created a document that can be used by hospitals, medical offices and cancer centers around the state to increase awareness of cancer patient rights and responsibilities. The document will be distributed as requested and can be copied by the requesting site. Legislative endorsement of the Cancer Patient Rights as and Responsibilities as a non-binding resolution may be sought during the upcoming legislative session. Endorsement as a non-binding resolution simply means that the legislative body recognizes the importance of the document. As a step to seeking endorsement of the document and of the non-binding resolution, the document was sent to medical centers, cancer centers, hospitals and hospices across the state. Endorsement was received from 23 of those bodies with 20 favoring a non-binding resolution. Those that did not wish to endorse the document cited similarity with existing procedures and documents within their organizations as the reason they would not utilize the Patient Rights and Responsibilities document.
